Pickleball might be your new favorite sport (like it is for me), but what happens when the heavens open and the rain starts to fall? If you are as passionate about pickleball as I am, it’s disheartening when weather conditions seem unfavorable.  When heading to the courts, grey skies can ruin my mood.  But can you play pickleball in the rain?

Yes, you can technically play pickleball in the rain. If it’s just sprinkling outside and it feels like a light mist, it’s perfectly fine to keep playing. It might even feel good. But, if it’s pouring and you see lightning, it is unwise to keep playing and you should get indoors where it’s safe. 

So, it kind of depends on how severe the rainstorm is.  I’ve played in some minor showers that have rolled through pretty quickly.  But anything more than that, and you run the risk of serious injury from slipping because it’s just not safe.

While you can play pickleball in the rain, it is not always a good idea. I’ve seen firsthand how slippery the courts can get. This makes it easy to slip and fall. Plus, you can lose your balance when trying to make quick cuts from side to side.

Rain also makes it hard to see. Fast shots become harder to spot and avoid. Meaning, that the chances of getting hit with a ball go up. Ouch!

Plus, the ball plays differently in the rain. It bounces lower and reacts differently when hitting a wet spot on the court. So, though playing pickleball during a rainstorm sounds fun, there are risks to be aware of! Not to mention how cold you might get. Playing pickleball while wet and cold, may not be fun for long.

Playing pickleball in the rain presents some safety risks. Wet conditions increase your chances of slipping, falling, and injuring yourself on the court. Did you know pickleball-related injuries in the US have already totaled more than 377 million dollars this year alone?

Visibility becomes a challenge as well; drops of rain can obstruct your view and distort your perception, making it hard to track the ball’s trajectory accurately.

Also, and perhaps most importantly if you’re a gearhead like me, water can damage your equipment – cheap wooden paddles may suffer water damage and become unplayable.

But I’d never recommend wooden paddles, try these instead – they made me a better player!

Clearing puddles from the court helps, but it doesn’t stop all slips. You must be very careful if you choose to play in wet conditions. Falling on a hard surface like a court is bad enough when it’s dry, let alone when it’s slippery!

Rain can make it hard to see on the court as well. A light rain that blows through quickly might be manageable. But heavy rain can impact your ability to see the ball.

Pickleball can become tricky to spot in wet conditions. Strong rain also forces you to squint. This pulls focus from the game, increasing chances for misses and wrong moves. Or, getting hit!

Wearing a hat or sports glasses helps keep your eyes clear of water drops, but even then, catching high-speed shots is still tough.

Here’s the truth, water can hurt your pickleball gear. And that includes rainwater. While most good paddles have a protective layer to help protect from the sun’s UV rays, most don’t have any protection against water.

While getting your paddles a little wet is okay, playing in heavy rain is not. This is because you run the risk of damaging the textured surface that so many good paddles come with to help add spin to the ball. Extensive water exposure can affect that textured layer.

In addition to paddle wear and tear, rain can affect the actual pickleball as well.

In rain, the pickleball might react differently when wet because it does not bounce high or fly straight on wet ground. Thus, rain can make playing more of a challenge because of the effect it has on your paddle and the ball.
